Twizel
Twizel is Booming!
Previously undiscovered and somewhat unloved there is now a new exuberance for the old Hydro town. New houses are popping up everywhere as locals and outsiders alike embrace the new Twizel. You cannot get a builder as all of the local builders are flat out.
Combined with an ever increasing number of services, Twizel is becoming the hub of the Mackenzie Basin. The latest additions to the town are the recently opened new Service Station and proposed new Medical Centre. Once complete this will be a state of the art purpose built medical facility servicing the region from Omarama to Mt Cook Village to Lake Tekapo.
Centrally situated within the Mackenzie Basin and its lakes the current population of 1,600 is swamped by up to 10,000 holiday makers every summer. They are attracted to the areas open spaces, easy access to beautiful lakes, and picturesque mountains and scenery. Mountain Biking, fishing, skiing, boating and hiking are all activities that can be easily undertaken using Twizel as a base. It is also the perfect place from which to explore the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park.
Twizel was built in 1968 as the base for the Upper Waitaki Hydro Power Scheme and was designed for a resident population of 6,000 people including families. Its infrastructure has been under-utilized since the project was completed meaning the town has a huge capacity to grow, especially now that previous development barriers have been removed. The opportunities in Twizel are limitless.
Twizel has a peaceful laid back lifestyle for which more and more people are starting to appreciate.
